Japan honors Kamal Tabrizi

Japan has honored veteran Iranian director Kamal Tabrizi.

On the occasion of the 90th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Iran and Japan, the Foreign Ministry of Japan has granted a medal of honor to Tabrizi on June 16.

Tabrizi was praised for his remarkable contributions to the promotion of cultural relations between the two countries through the medium of cinema.

Kamal Tabrizi directed ‘Wind Carpet’, an Iran-Japan co-production in 2001. He also served as an adviser to the director for another Iranian Japanese joint production ‘New Moon Hotel’ produced in 2019, directed by Takefumi Tsutsui, starring Mahnaz Afshar.

'The Earth Marathon' is also another joint project between the two countries, directed by Kamal Tabrizi.

Born 1959 in Tehran, Tabrizi has directed several movies, including ‘On the Altar of Love’ (1990), ‘The End of Childhood’ (1993), ‘Sheida’ (1998), ‘Look at the Sky Sometimes’ (2002), ‘A Piece of Bread’ (2004), ‘There's Always a Woman Involved’ (2007), ‘Sensitive Level’ (2013), and ‘Sweet Taste of Dream’ (2014).

He has also directed some series such as ‘Time of Rebellion’ (2001), ‘Shahriar’ (2005), and ‘Ancient Land’ (2010-2015).

Tabrizi’s ‘The Wind Carpet’ (2002) received the Special Jury Prize and the Audience Award for Best Film at the Fajr Film Festival.

He is most famous for making the memorable movie ‘The Lizard’ (2003) for which he received the Audience Award and Special Jury Award at the 22nd Fajr Film Festival as well as the Golden Zenith for Best Film from Asia at Montréal World Film Festival in 2004.
